Best Time for Snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan

When Is the Best Month for Snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan?
If you’re planning a snorkeling trip to Nusa Lembongan, choosing the right time can make a big difference. The best snorkeling conditions depend not only on the month you visit, but also on the weather, wind, waves, tides, currents, and underwater visibility on the day of your trip.
In general, April to October is considered the best period for snorkeling around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, with the dry season often bringing better visibility and more predictable sea conditions.
However, snorkeling is possible throughout the year when sea conditions are suitable.
Best Month for Snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan?
April – June: Excellent Conditions
April to June is one of our favorite periods for snorkeling.
The weather generally becomes drier, and sea conditions can become more predictable. These months can also offer a good balance between snorkeling conditions and visitor numbers.
Best for: Families and beginners, clearer water, coral reef snorkeling, Sea turtles, and Manta ray trips when conditions are suitable
July – September: Peak Dry Season
July, August, and September are popular months for visiting Nusa Lembongan.
The dry season generally provides favorable conditions for snorkeling, although July and August can be busy because they are peak travel months.
For the best experience, we recommend booking an early morning snorkeling trip, especially during busy periods.
October Good Shoulder-Season Option
October can still offer good snorkeling conditions while visitor numbers may begin to decrease.
It can be a good option if you want a combination of favorable weather and a quieter island atmosphere.
November – March: Wet Season
Snorkeling is still possible during the wet season, but conditions can be more variable.
Rain, wind, swell, and currents can affect visibility and boat conditions. Some days can still have excellent snorkeling, particularly when the weather and sea are calm.
For this reason, we recommend checking the actual sea conditions rather than choosing a trip based only on the month.
What Is the Best Time of Day to Snorkel?
Early Morning
For most snorkeling trips, early morning is our preferred departure time.
We generally recommend starting around 7:00 AM–7:30 AM when possible.
Early departures can provide: A more relaxed snorkeling experience, calmer sea conditions on suitable days, better light for underwater photography, and less boat traffic at popular locations.
Tide, Wind, Swell, and Currents
However, the best departure time can change depending on the tide, wind, swell, currents, and conditions at each snorkeling location.
Our local crew checks the conditions before departure and can adjust the itinerary when necessary.
Manta Rays
What About Manta Rays?
Manta rays can be encountered around the Nusa Islands throughout the year, but sightings are never guaranteed because they are wild animals. Current local diving information also describes manta encounters around Nusa Penida as a year-round possibility.
For a manta snorkeling trip, sea conditions are more important than simply choosing a particular month.
If conditions at one location are unsuitable, our captain may change the snorkeling location or itinerary for safety and comfort.
Manta Bay vs Manta Point
Manta Bay and Manta Point are different locations and can have different sea conditions.
Manta Point can experience stronger currents and challenging conditions. It is not suitable for every swimmer, particularly when the sea is rough.
Our captain and guide will assess the conditions before deciding which location is appropriate.
Safety always comes first
Does the Tide Affect Snorkeling?
Yes.
Tides can affect:
- Water depth
- Current strength
- Visibility
- Access to snorkeling areas
- Coral reef conditions
This is why there is not one fixed “best time” every day.
Our team monitors the tide, wind, swell, currents, visibility, and snorkeling site conditions before recommending the day’s itinerary.
What Is the Best Season for Families and Beginners?
For families and beginners, we recommend choosing a day with calm sea conditions rather than focusing only on the season.
The dry season, particularly May to September, is often a good period to consider, but daily conditions are always more important than the calendar.
If the sea is rough, our team may recommend calmer snorkeling locations instead of exposed sites.
Our Daily Snorkeling Decision
At Traevo, we don’t simply follow a fixed itinerary every day.
Before departure, our team checks:
- Sea conditions
- Wind direction and speed
- Swell and wave height
- Tide conditions
- Underwater visibility
- Snorkeling site conditions
- Current strength
Based on these conditions, we select the most suitable snorkeling locations and departure plan for the day.
If conditions are not suitable for a particular location, we may change the snorkeling spot, adjust the itinerary, change the departure time, or recommend rescheduling.
Your safety and enjoyment are always our priority.
